GHAAC HISTORY

The Greater Houston Alcorn Alumni Chapter, previously known as the Houston ASU Alumni Chapter was organized and received its Charter in October 1966. In order to qualify for a charter, a minimum of five (5) Alcornites were required. We were able to meet the member requirement. They were as follows: Willie Howard Edwards ’63 * Joseph Dunbar, MD ‘65 Samuel S. Jackson ‘55 Isom Johnson ‘66* Theresa N. Prater ‘55 Robert L. Prater ’53. All of the members made significant contributions to the university. Under the leadership of our President, Robert L. Prater, we were vigilant in seeking new members in the Houston and Prairie View area. Early chapter meetings were held in the homes of members, local parks, libraries, and at Texas Southern University. As the membership grew, we began fundraising activities that would allow us to host groups of ASU students and faculty members that would come to Houston for events such as the basketball and football games as well as university president Meet and Greet. Our service area includes the Houston, TX metro area (Harris, Waller, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Liberty, and Chambers Counties). We have made contributions to Alcorn State University each year with the leadership of the following presidents in the order listed.
